Procrastination is the act of putting off starting or completing a task or a series of tasks. Studies show that the reason we procrastinate is because the human brain tends to value instant rewards rather than long term rewards. An example would be, to want to have increased fitness levels which is a future goal, while the present goal would be to indulge in a pastry.
Other reasons for procrastination with possible solutions are :
Fear of Failure: If you have a fear of failure, you may delay taking action on a task. If you don’t take action, you definitely will not fail. What is important to keep in mind is, it is better to attempt something and fail that not to have tried at all. The fear of failure can well be attributed to not having tried at all.
Perfectionism: If you are driven to being a perfectionist, chances are you may not try something new or different. The fear of not reaching your level of perfection on your first attempt may be quite daunting. This could make you delay or procrastinate. The way to overcome this, would be to do your best and accept the outcome. Remember, there is no such thing as perfect. Perfection is only your perception, while to someone else it may or may not be the same.
Lack of Structure: If you have an unhealthy lifestyle or an unfocused approach to achieving tasks, you may find yourself procrastinating. Set Goals, make a checklist, form a healthier routine that gives you balance. These structures will enable you to take on tasks more easily and avoid procrastination.
Unpleasant or boring tasks: Some tasks, like filing taxes may be boring and tedious to some of you and hence you may procrastinate. The way to get over this boredom is to attempt it in small chunks. Small tasks are easier to accomplish than larger tasks. Set aside 15-30 minutes a day to go through your tax work. It will give you the satisfaction that you are working towards your goal.Another way is to reward yourself for completing a task with something you like to do or have. When I filed my taxes on time last year, I bought myself a bunch of my favorite flowers and took time out to go to the movies to appreciate myself.
